The Fitler Club, scheduled to open in early 2019, is being built in a former motor car factory on the edge of Philadelphia’s Center City downtown area and touted by its developers, few of whom have had any previous connection with the club business, as “the next evolution in private lifestyle club space.”
Design Firms Named for Golf Course Projects in Florida, New Jersey
The Grove XXIII course in Hobe Sound, Fla., a new private club project for which basketball star Michael Jordan is the majority partner, will be designed by Bobby Weed Golf Design. In Swainton, N.J., the course at Sand Barrens Golf Club that was acquired by The Union League of Philadelphia and is being rebranded as the Union League National Golf Club will be renovated by Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design.

The Union League of Philadelphia Shops for New Golf Club
According to a blog in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the club is looking to buy a second golf club, with Wildwood Golf & Country Club in Cape May Court House, N.J., reportedly the frontrunner, though the Union League has “not made any decisions.” The club will also open its Union League Guard House restaurant in Gladwyne, Pa., on March 1.
CMAA Upper Midwest Chapter Hosts Speaker Series
The speaker roundtable was presented by the Club Managers Association of America in partnership with Club Benchmarking, and was held October 24 at the Minneapolis Club. Brass Handrail Stolen from The Union League of Philadelphia
A surveillance camera captured images of a thief removing the handrail from a curved staircase to the club’s main entrance, which toppled the stone balustrade. In a statement, the club said it “will work to restore the staircase to its original condition as soon as possible.”
Pope Francis Uses Golf Cart from The Union League During Philadelphia Visit
When the Pope needed a way to get around the grounds at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pa., a member of The Union League of Philadelphia found a way to provide a six-person, electric golf cart featuring the club’s emblem. What will happen to the golf cart going forward has yet to be determined.
