An agreement of sale for the 110-acre property was reached last November, contingent on rezoning that would eliminate a current restriction for anything but one single-family residence. The proposal for the medical center, described as “a cross between a Ritz-Carlton and a hospital,” would use 30 acres for a 42-bed facility.
In an editorial, the Las Cruces Sun-News acknowledged public sentiment for turning the long-vacant 110 acres into a “premier” park or zoo, but said “it’s important to view the [proposed development] for what it is—a private land sale between buyer and seller both looking to make the best deal possible.”
The club, closed last November, can’t use its irrigation system after emptying its ponds. The city has made an offer to buy the property but club officials rejected the $1 million proposal.
