Daryl Landrum, the golf coach for Northern Kentucky University, bought the Batavia, Ohio club with two partners under the name 3D Golf. Landrum plans to install a learning center and a full pro shop, while juggling ownership of Meadowbrook GC in Burlington, Ky., and his role as Director of Golf at Eagle Creek CC in Dry Ridge, Ky.
Legendary golfers and prestigious events are integral to the history of Portland Golf Club, which is gearing up for its 100th anniversary—and a course-and-grounds team, led by a superintendent who is well-schooled in tradition, is properly preserving the past while preparing for new chapters to come.
The Tillinghast-designed course at the Mamaroneck, N.Y. course hosted its first Open in 1929. This will be its sixth Open, trailing only Oakmont CC and Baltusrol GC for most all-time.
Greg Norman Golf Course Design headed the project at the Pompano Beach, Fla., municipal course, which has been closed since April 2012. Upgrades included planting Celebration Bermuda turf, updating irrigation, and other improvements to keep the course playable while bringing maintenance costs down.
The 2,000-acre property, which was recently purchased out of bankruptcy by the Singapore government, will remain a PGA-branded resort and continue to be the home of The Bob Hope Classic, through 2061. The deal gives the resort exclusive rights to use the PGA name within a 250-mile radius, in return for an annual royalty payment.
The iPhone and iPad application for the Naples, Fla. course offers hole-by-hole layouts, yardages and 3-D flyover views. Tilting the screen at a 90-degree angle provides a detailed, interactive map of each hole. Additional features include tee times, weather forecasts, a photo gallery and social media options.
To stand out in a crowded field, this Scottsdale club has found the right spots to offer a little bit more—and a little bit less.
Upgrades at the Peoria, Ariz. course include a newly constructed pergola, “The View from the Q,” that overlooks the practice range and includes a barbecue and service area. A new putting green and more tee boxes have been added, the clubhouse grill has been remodeled, and the golf shop has been renovated.
