Improvements at the Bandon Trails golf course, construction of a large putting course known as “Punch Bowl,” and new decking for the clubhouse round out the latest list of updates for the Bandon, Ore., golf resort. Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore redesigned Bandon Trails’ 18th hole, lowering the dune and green, and softening a severe slope after guests frequently noted the hole’s difficulty.
The landfill site of the three-year Dallas project is presenting a challenge for designers Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, who will be providing their services for “zero profit.” Crenshaw calls it a “landfill with character,” and Coore says no one will “confuse [the site] with Cypress Point,” but the two are plunging into the project, which has been touted as an urban-renewal tonic for a blighted area of the city.
The development of The Mosaic Company on former phosphate mining land in central Florida features courses designed by Coore & Crenshaw and Renaissance Golf Lodge. A 216-room lodge and conference center will open this fall.
The 18-hole championship course for an exclusive new club that is being planned for one of the poorest sections of Dallas is being touted as a win-win for the city’s golf community, as well as for its economic revival.
A well-coordinated strategy has led members and guests from all corners of the country to discover “the Plains truth.”
With a heartier root structure that resists heat, moisture and disease, the new Bermuda grass will replace the course’s current bentgrass through the sprigging process, which will spread quickly and allow fall season play on the new greens.
“Golf’s Grand Design” will begin to air on August 3, featuring interviews with leading course architects as well as Jack Nicklaus and other sources.
Though the rest of the Polk County, Fla., resort won’t open until 2013, the golf course will be made available to the public at the end of this year following the completion of greens upgrades.
