The new owner of the North Carolina property says he will restore clubhouse facilities, the pro shop and pool, but wants to parcel and sell the course, which was designed in part by Donald Ross, in five-acre lots.
The agreement reached in federal court is the latest regulatory action to come from a 2007 accident that dumped herbicides into the North Fork of the Roanoke River, killing about 10,000 fish. Combined with earlier action, the incident has cost the club more than $60,000.
At Lake Ashton G&CC, the 75-year-old man was grabbed by a 9-foot, 190-lb. gator when he went to recover his ball from a pond. He survived after being let go, but needed 40 stitches to close a 10-inch gash in his leg.
The property in Jefferson, N.J., located along the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, is a facility of the Morris County Park Commission.
August 21 is the deadline to apply to attend the professional development program for golf course superintendents, to be held December 3-6 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The total for this year’s second major, to be held June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, is the fourth-highest in the history of the championship, and just 80 shy of the all-time record set for the 2009 tournament at Bethpage Black.

The Bluefield, W. Va. club saw only 8,000 member rounds last year; 55 non-member golfers took advantage of a special deal last fall, and another 250 have been back this spring.
