Because of renovations and improvements to the course’s irrigation system, the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club—formerly the Sheraton Steamboat Golf Course—in Steamboat Springs, Colo., will offer golfers 17 holes when they open for play later this month.

In an article in The Steamboat Pilot & Today, Director of Golf Brian Thorne said that players will have the opportunity to play another hole to get in the “customary 18” if the course isn’t too busy, with availability subject to change on a day-to-day basis.

Why only 17 holes, though? The goal of the new irrigation system has been to improve the turf and conserve water. Other course improvements include more parking and the addition of tee boxes on 14 of the holes.

In addition to the golf course upgrades, the Sheraton Steamboat Resort currently is in the midst of a $20 million renovation project and will reopen to guests early in June.
