The Chenequa Country Club in Hartland, Wis. (suburban Milwaukee) bridges the generation gap each year with a “Chenequa Ryder Cup” competition that pits Senior players (over 55) against Juniors (under 55). The event runs over two days, reports the club’s Michael Paddock, with designated captains for each side selecting the pairings. Every player receives a special shirt that is made up for their team.
On the first day, teams compete in two-man alternate shot and best-ball events. At the end of the first day’s play, all players gather in the clubhouse for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while discussing the competition and current standings. At this time, the captains select their players for the singles matches on day two. “This process usually provokes some heckling from the players as they get psyched for the next day,” says Paddock.
On the second day, as golfers finish their matches, they gather at the 18th hole to cheer for their teammates as they continue to finish out. To feed the growing gallery of participants, Chenequa’s chef grills steak sandwiches out on the course that players and spectators can order, along with a lunch buffet.
Over the past 10 years, the competition has been quite even, with the Senior team holding a 6 to 4 edge over the Juniors. The event has become so popular that Chenequa is considering a qualifying round to earn a spot on either team. More importantly, Paddock reports, “It has created a great camaraderie among the golfers, allowing people who may not normally play together the opportunity to meet. The enthusiasm for the event and its interest and popularity continues to grow, along with the junior/senior rivalry.”
