The "Little Chef's Hour" at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. guided children and young adults as they learned simple baking and cooking techniques along with safety and health protocol.
Amy O'Toole, event director, and Executive Chef Andreas Pico recently executed the event for PICC member's children. The topic? Make-your-own pizza. Pico covered the basics of making dough from scratch, the ingredients needed, rolling techniques, and more while an audience of 23 kids watched with delight. As an added bonus, kids also made and baked cupcakes with Pastry Chef Todd Howell.
"As the cupcake batter was being prepared the kids decided they wanted blue cupcakes," says Larry Yount, General Manager. "Howell made a quick retreat to the kitchen for some blue food coloring. There were squeals of delight from the kids when the blue cupcakes came out of oven."
According to Yount, the event was a tremendous success. "We had set a goal to host 20 'little chef's.' For us, that would have been a sellout. We ended up taking 23 kids who had a ball making their own pizza and cupcakes. Interestingly, we also saw a spike in our dining room sales for that evening as Mom & Dad enjoyed the chance for a quiet dinner together."
