More than Machines

In addition to cardiovascular and strength equipment, there has been a growing trend toward balance, core and resistance training. The 3,200-sq.-ft. fitness center at Red Mountain Ranch CC in Mesa, Ariz., accommodates many fitness levels and offers more than machines to keep members fit. “The fitness center should not have all machines; there has to be other things for people to do,” says Director of Fitness Kelly Michael.

Red Mountain’s fitness center is fully stocked with BOSU balls, balance balls, resistance bands, medicine balls, punching bags, kick-boxing bags, body bars and ankle weights. Fitness centers should have a matted area for members to do floor work with these pieces.

Along with providing members with variety, adding this equipment into the rotation is very affordable—resistance bands range from $3 to $15 apiece; body bars range from $40 to $80 apiece; and BOSU balls cost $100 apiece.
