Seeking to expand its reach by offering more activities for guests, The Essex, a culinary resort and spa in Burlington, Vt. formerly know as The Inn at Essex, has opened a full-service, 21,000-sq. ft. spa with a 25-yard indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, 10 treatment rooms, spa cuisine, a fitness center and locker rooms featuring steam rooms, saunas and relaxation areas.

“The name change has been a long time coming, and we’re delighted that it’s now official,” said Jim Glanville, Manager of the Resort. “[The name] ‘The Inn at Essex’ served us well for many years, but the fact is, we’re not really an ‘inn,’ and haven’t been for some time. We’re a full-service resort with 120 guest rooms and suites.

“Our guests can choose from two on-site restaurants and a multitude of cooking classes run by the New England Culinary Institute,” Glanville added. “There’s an on-site trout fishing pond, world-class rock- and ice-climbing, and a challenge course. We’ve got a championship golf course, tennis courts, banquet and conference facilities, balloon rides and now our own full-service spa and natatorium—we’re significantly more than an inn.”

In the summer of 2009, The Essex will expand its public culinary teaching program by opening a new hands-on kitchen with capacity for up to 24 participants.
