BlackBerry Thumb, iPod Finger, Tech Neck. These are just a few of the modern ailments now affecting those who use handheld electronic devices in their personal and professional lives. To help alleviate the pain associated with these afflictions, some spas have developed treatments that target susceptible areas of the body. For example, the Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa in New York City offers a “Tech Neck” massage that works on muscles in the head, neck, forearm, and upper and middle back that stiffen from hunching over a computer.
Surely, it won’t be long before spas at clubs and resorts also start to field requests for such treatments from stressed-out members and guests. In fact, the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort and Spa has already introduced the “BlackBerry Balm Hand Massage” at its Agua Serena Spa. The treatment eases the tenderness caused by rigorous typing on handheld devices and incorporates Hyatt’s exclusive “Blackberry Balm,” containing blackberry powder, cajaput and camphor oil along with cinnamon, clove and peppermint. — LWB
Hyatt Grand Champions Resort and Spa in California has introduced a hand massage to help ease “BlackBerry Thumb,” recently recognized as an official workplace malady by The American Physical Therapy Association. More thumbs will soon be afflicted; Research In Motion Ltd., maker of the popular BlackBerry device, added 875,000 new subscribers during the third quarter of 2006.
