Judge Earns a Save
The 1979 World Series trophy earned by the Pittsburgh Pirates was saved from being sold at auction at the end of March when U.S. Bankruptcy Court Chief Judge M. Bruce McCullough upheld an emergency motion filed by the team. The trophy had been in the possession of the former Allegheny Club, which declared bankruptcy in 2002 and then merged with the HYP Pittsburgh Club. The newly formed Allegheny HYP Club inherited the predecessor club’s bankruptcy obligations and was seeking to sell the Series trophy and other memorabilia to pay creditors. The trophy was appraised at $25,000 but some potential bidders have indicated a willingness to pay as much as $100,000 for it. Judge McCullough ordered the Allegheny HYP Club and the baseball team to discuss how the issue can be resolved and if no resolution is reached before the next hearing in 30 days, an evidentiary hearing could be set.
