Frederick, Md., officials and the police department are conducting an investigation of the city-owned golf course to determine whether employees have given private lessons and clinics while on city time, as well as possible cash register theft.
An investigation is underway into possible theft and mismanagement at the Clustered Spires Golf Course. It’s being conducted by Frederick City officials and the police department, the Frederick, Md.-based WFMD 930 reported.
“I had a number of people come to me with documentation and with concerns about what might be going on at Clustered Spires,” said Alderwoman Donna Kuzemchak. “I shared them with the police. Later on I shared them with the HR (Human Resources) and a few days later, the Mayor.
“They told me there were some issues with the operating procedures and how the cash register is taken care of. There were some questions about, in my mind anyway, whether people at the golf course were trying to go around the budget process,” Kuzemchak said.
The investigation is looking into possible cash register theft and whether PGA golf pro and club manager, Donald Frost, and other employees were giving private lessons and clinics while they were on city time, WFMD reported.
“People are innocent until proven otherwise. That’s something I understand completely, and I think the general public needs to understand,” Kuzemchak said.
Alderwoman Kuzemchak has expressed concerns in the past about the apparent lack of oversight at the Clustered Spires Golf Course by the city, which owns the property, WFMD reported. “I would just like to note that I’m not the only person who’s had concerns about oversight at Clustered Spires Golf Course. There are other elected officials, many of them through the years,” she says.
Alderwoman Kuzemchak has also talked about selling the property because it has cost the city a lot of money, but she’s not adamant about it. “In my mind, if we can find a way to keep it open without losing money, I’m not sure that selling is the smartest way to go,” she says.
Nothing has been decided regarding the future of the Clustered Spires Golf Course, city officials told WFMD.
