A surveillance camera caught a glimpse of two vandals on their third visit to the Littleton, Colo., property. Incidents in January and February resulted in damage to a chain link fence and golf carts, with one driven onto a frozen lake.
Authorities are on the lookout for vandals who caused more than $25,000 in damage to golf carts and fencing at the Meadows Golf Club in Littleton, Colo., the Littleton-based Columbine Courier reported.
Vandals visited the course on three separate occasions over the past month. The first incident was on January 31 when the suspects defeated a fence and damaged 16 golf carts, said Ron Hopp, executive director of the Foothills Park and Recreation District, which owns and operates the golf course.
Hopp said the damage to the chain-link fence that encloses the carts likely was caused by someone attaching a chain to a support pole and using a vehicle to pull it down, the Courier reported.
“This was very intentional. It wasn’t like they came across the carts out in the open,” Hopp said. “The damage to the fence alone was about $2,700.”
In the first incident, Hopp said, the carts were damaged to varying degrees. Some had wires cut, while others were virtually demolished, the Courier reported.
As Foothills was fixing the fence, the golf carts were vandalized a second time February 6, when the perpetrators apparently used the carts as bumper cars. One was driven onto a frozen lake, the Courier reported
“Since the fence wasn’t repaired yet, it was much easier to get to the carts a second time,” Hopp said. “Coming back a second time is a pretty brazen move.”
After the second incident, the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office installed motion-activated night-vision surveillance cameras, which may have averted a third incident, the Courier reported.
“The vandals came back a third time but saw the signs about security monitoring from the Sheriff’s Office,” Hopp said. “They chose not to break in a third time.”
While Foothills carries insurance on the carts, Hopp said there is a substantial deductible. The Sheriff’s Office captured an image of two suspects during the third vandalism attempt and believes they are connected to a white sedan also caught on cameras, the Courier reported.
