The St. Augustine, Fla., property is one of five golf clubs in the country that offers the electric skateboards designed to be used by golfers, which are proving to be an effective way to bring in non-golfers.
GolfBoards are quickly becoming one of the hottest commodities at St. Johns Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla., the St. Augustine Record reported.
“It’s just a different way to play golf,” golfer Craig Shryock said. “I like to walk, and I like to ride some days. This is kind of a mixture of both. It’s just fun. It’s something different and a great way to play a round of golf.”
Rather than riding a traditional cart through a round of play, golfers now have the opportunity to rent the scooter-like vehicle for a morning or afternoon of transportation on the golf course, the Record reported.
A GolfBoard features a skateboard-sized deck mounted on a Segway scooter. Golfers have a place to mount their bag and can glide from hole to hole with a top speed of about 10 mph, the Record reported.
C&RB reported on the development of the contraption late last year.
“It is basically a surfboard on wheels,” head golf professional Brian Rogers said. “They are extremely popular. It’s a great way to separate our facility here from other places.”
St. Johns is one of only two clubs in Florida and five in the country that have GolfBoards available. There are eight available for rent each day, and the price is the same as a traditional golf cart. Given those factors, guest and members have been quick to jump on board, the Record reported.
“It’s very simple to use and easy to operate,” Shryock said. “It definitely draws some new golfers in that I have seen who have never played before.”
