[The Cuckoo’s Nest] confirms the notion that like-minded people are inclined to seek out one another in a relaxed, collegial setting.
According to Fortune magazine, and as reported in C&RB’s December 15 daily e-newsletter, a new private social club in California’s Silicon Valley will open in the first quarter this year.
The Cuckoo’s Nest—which takes its name from the best-selling book and subsequent movie, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”—intends to be a “techie version of the blue-blooded clubs of yesteryear, where corporate scions wearing suits and ties lounged in big leather chairs to talk deals, puff cigars and sip bourbon.” Sounds like my kind of place, even if I am not a “techie”—and I can’t wait to see the club’s logo.
The more pragmatic raison d’être for The Cuckoo’s Nest is to be “the ultimate indoor/outdoor dining, drinking, and special-events venue for founders, CEOs, investors and artists in the Silicon Valley area.” Prospective members certainly have a myriad of existing networking opportunities and venues available to them, so it remains to be seen if the club can attract a sustainable membership base. Sound familiar?
My first thought when I read news of the club’s founding was that it confirms the notion that like-minded people are inclined to seek out one another in a relaxed, collegial setting. This premise holds true whether the common interest is golf, boating, dining, trap and skeet shooting, or tech talk. And it’s why the future for the club industry is bright.
Best wishes to The Cuckoo’s Nest. If you meet and exceed member expectations, you will have a bright future. If you don’t, you will go the way of the Betamax.
January signals the start of the club industry trade show and conference season. We look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks and months. Among other things, we will be interested to hear your thoughts on the look and content value of the redesigned print edition of C&RB you are reading now. We’ve also launched a redesigned website at clubandresortbusiness.com. We like our new looks, and hope you do, too.
Finally, space at the 7th Annual Chef to Chef Conference, which will take place March 1-3 in Savannah, Ga., is filling fast. The program is loaded with demos, ideas, and networking opportunities with more than 250 club and resort food-and-beverage professionals.
You can check out the agenda and register at www.CheftoChefConference.com. I may be biased, but it’s my favorite event of the year.
