New management at the nine-hole property is scheduling a day of free golf as well as activities for kids on October 25.
The new management at Waynesboro (Pa.) Municipal Golf Course will hold a grand opening celebration the weekend of October 24, the Chambersburg (Pa.) Public Opinion reported.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. on October 24. Waynesboro Mayor Richard Starliper will be in attendance to reopen the course, which is now under the management of PGA Golf Professional Dan Baker and the Morning Tee Box, the Public Opinion reported.
The course will be offering free golf on October 25, excluding the cost of a cart rental. There will also be activities for kids, the Public Opinion reported.
Baker hopes the grand opening will be an opportunity to show off some of the recent improvements made at the course since the change in management. “I want people to come back and take a look at what we’ve done and see that we’re here to stay,” Baker said.
Baker said his priorities have been getting the nine-hole, par-36 course back into playing shape. Recent projects included clearing bunkers, aerating greens, fertilizing tees, repaving the parking lot and renovating the clubhouse, the Public Opinion reported.
Next year, he hopes to add some amenities like a putting green and a short-game practice area.
“We’re going to put life back into the course,” Baker said.
The struggling course, owned by the Waynesboro Borough Authority, had been on the verge of closing. In its 2014 budget, the borough was forecasting a $20,000 shortfall. Council had agreed during budget deliberations to close the golf course when its deficit reached $20,000, the Public Opinion reported.
That threshold was reached in the summer, but because August income is typically higher, council granted the Waynesboro Borough Authority’s request and continued to finance the course until September 30 while they solicited proposals to lease the property, the Public Opinion reported.
“The people that play here love the course,” Baker said. “It’s got some great character—it’s hilly, it’s got small greens, there are great views.”
Though this season is almost over, golfers have started to notice some of the recent changes at the course, Baker said.
