The Magalia, Calif. property is owned by the Safor Corp., whose other business venture is the Del Oro Water Co., which will now lose its biggest customer.
Paradise Pines Golf Course in Magalia, Calif., is closing after 44 years, the Chico (Calif.) Enterprise Record reported. The nine-hole course will shut down at the end of October, said Bob Fortino, Chief Executive Officer of the property’s owner, The Safor Corp.
The course had been on the market for about a year, with professional marketers specializing in golf courses handling the listing, Fortino told the Enterprise Record. “But we have not had a qualified buyer to date and we had to come to a decision, and that decision was at the end of the month we’re closing the golf operations,” he said.
Fortino had never thought that Paradise Pines would be anything but a recreational facility, but increases in expenses forced his hand, the Enterprise Record noted.
“The rounds of golf were not adequate to support ongoing operations and expenses,” he said. Utilities, wages and equipment costs have risen substantially, he explained.
Ironically, the decision to close Paradise Pines will also cause losses for The Safor Corp.’s other business venture, Del Oro Water Co., because the course has been the water company’s biggest customer, the Enterprise Record noted.
In addition, course employees will lose their jobs, the community will lose tax revenue and regular players like Ann Gullick will lose a favorite place to play. “I’m very sad. We loved it here,” Gullick said as she finished up a game with two friends. “We’d go around twice and play 18 holes.”
