2014 Chef to Chef Conference Kicks Off March 2

Palm Beach (Fla.) CC Fence Approved After “Chainsaw Massacre”
On January 9, trimmers for a general contractor mistakenly cut and removed trees along the club’s border with a homeowner’s property, which the club claimed caused $500,000 worth of damage. The architectural commission approved a 6-foot-tall, 1,073-linear-foot-long black chain link fence along the club’s north property line as a result, and lawsuits related to the incident are ongoing.
Owners to Sell Prestonwood CC After Water Dispute
The Miller family, which has owned the Dallas, Texas club for about 36 years, is selling the property to an undisclosed buyer in a deal scheduled to close on March 3. Earlier this month, the club offered to pay the city $50,000 and give it the right of way to build a wastewater pipeline under its golf course following allegations that the club diverted city-owned water to irrigate its second golf course in Plano, Texas.
Woodfield CC Plans $24M Renovation
Architectural plans and timetables for the Boca Raton, Fla., property’s renovation will be finalized this year with construction beginning in 2015. The plan includes new card rooms, interior design updates for the main clubhouse and dining, and an overhaul of the fitness, aquatics, poolside dining, and childcare areas.
Chambers Bay Could Add $120M Hotel, Golf Course
Sonnenblick Development, a California hotel developer, is drawing up plans to build a 220-room hotel and a second 18-hole golf course on the county-owned University Place, Wash., property. The firm has until mid-June to develop the project and finance plans, and if a deal is reached, construction would begin after the property hosts the U.S. Open in June 2015.
Wheeler, McKenzie Named Master Club Managers
The Club Managers Association of America has named Michael S. Wheeler, MCM, CCE, General Manager/Chief Operating Officer of Cherokee Town & Country Club, Atlanta, Ga., and Lawrence J. McKenzie, MCM, CCE, of London, Ontario, Canada, as Master Club Managers. The designation recognizes the importance of the significant contributions made by club managers to their clubs, professions and communities.
River Valley Ranch Exempt from Noise Ordinance
The Carbondale, Colo., ordinance prohibits sustained noise of more than 55 decibels in residential zone districts between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., but the town’s Board of Trustees voted to exempt the golf course following complaints by nearby homeowners. The Board granted the exemption because residents signed contracts accepting noise at odd hours when they purchased their homes.
City Approves Construction at The CC of Hudson (Ohio)
The club plans to add a detached 580-sq. ft. food and bar service cabana building, and a 200-sq. ft. service galley addition to the main clubhouse. Though a commission member expressed some concern over noise levels, the architect assured the commission that no outdoor sound systems were proposed and that city noise ordinances were sufficient.
New Owners Guide Hocking Hills GC
Previously known as the Brass Ring Golf Club, the public Logan, Ohio property was purchased by Chris and Kim Lanning last year. The couple also opened the Urban Grille Pub and Restaurant on the property, which features seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farmers when possible, and is run by Head Chef David Ellis.
State Sells 83 Acres of Santa Teresa (N.M.) CC for Back-Taxes
The parcel, a portion of one of two courses at the property, was sold last fall to Discount Land Exchange for $33,000, about 29% of the $114,200 owed in delinquent taxes by the club’s owner. One of the two remaining unsold lots contains the clubhouse, where a bar is still in operation, and has accrued $297,606 in delinquent taxes, penalties and interest.

Glendale CC Chef Wins Scholarship to 2014 Chef to Chef Conference
Alex Turner, Sous Chef at the Bellevue, Wash., club, was named the 2014 CMAA Evergreen Chapter Chef of the Year after winning the 9th annual Chef’s Competition on January 27. For the fifth year, the chapter is sending the winner of the competition to C&RB‘s annual chefs conference, which will be held in San Antonio on March 2-4.
Mountain View GC to be Auctioned Off
The 27-hole golf course in Graysville, Ala., will go up on the auction block on February 27. The 300-acre property includes a clubhouse, pro shop, banquet facility, cart barn, lakes and potential home sites, while the equipment and approximately 100 golf carts will be auctioned separately.
