The Topeka, Kan., property is facing closure after its three maintenance workers were cut from the parks and recreation department’s budget as part of a plan to save $1.4 million. GreatLife Golf & Fitness operates 24 golf courses and fitness centers in the state and will consult its members to determine interest in the golf course.
GreatLife Golf & Fitness is considering taking over Forbes Golf Course in Topeka, Kan., which county officials have indicated would probably close at the end of the year, the Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal reported.
The Shawnee County Commission voted to cut 29 positions from the parks and recreation department on November 7 as part of a plan to save $1.4 million. John Knight, parks and recreation director for the county, said the course likely would have to close because its three maintenance workers’ jobs were among those cut, the Capital-Journal reported.
Rick Farrant, President of GreatLife, said the company, which runs golf courses and fitness centers, would survey its members to see if they were interested. If those results were favorable, it would also look at interest among people using Forbes Golf Course now, the Capital-Journal reported
“More than likely, we’ll make some kind of official offer,” Farrant said. “We’re trying to promote and grow golf, so if any of (the courses) closes, it’s a bad day.”
GreatLife has 24 fitness centers and golf clubs around Kansas, including the Topeka YWCA’s fitness area and Shawnee County Country Club, the Capital-Journal reported.
The county can’t simply sell the course because the land was donated for public recreation, Farrant said.
