Members of the Indio, Calif., council unanimously approved the ordinance, which would allow the use of firearms to shoot American coot birds on golf courses in the area. Superintendents say the nuisance birds have inundated at least two Indio golf courses and damaged the green space.

Dallas-based Eagle Golf bought the Maumee, Ohio club in 2007 for $4.84 million. The property, which opened in 1967, includes an Arthur Hills-designed 18-hole course, nine-hole executive course, full-service restaurant, new fitness center, tennis courts, and a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The Southern Pines, N.C., council voted to rezone 588 acres for the planned development, which allows for a mix of residential and commercial uses. The initial proposal for the development includes a golf course, resort hotel, 200 residential units, commercial and office space, eight miles of walking trails and a one-mile horse trail.
Public golf courses Glengarry Golf Links and Phoenix at Buffalo Valley, both east of Pittsburgh, will remain open during the winter and will be open next year as well. Russellville (Ky.) Country Club’s nine-hole golf course will be sold separately from the clubhouse.
The Columbia Tower Club and The Rainier Club have altered dress policies, enhanced amenities and opened up the floor for suggestions from members on how to keep the private clubs relevant while competing with gourmet restaurants and finding a balance between “being exclusive without being exclusionary.”
After a Rye, N.H., resident hired an attorney to fight the installation of a fence by the club on the grounds that it hindered public access to the beach, club owner Bill Binnie responded to the issue. The club recognizes that the beach is public property, the owner said, but it erected the fence and installed landscaping to try to limit litter and dog waste from beach-goers.
