The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has selected Sea Colony beach and tennis resort, located just south of Bethany Beach, Delaware, to receive its 2012 Outstanding Facility of the Year award.

The USTA’s Outstanding Facility Award Program was established to stimulate high standards in tennis facilities and to recognize those facilities whose efforts make a positive statement about the vitality of the game. Since 1981, the USTA has annually recognized top tennis facilities in four categories, including small public tennis centers, large public tennis centers, educational institutions and private facilities.

The official award presentation will be made at the USTA semi-annual meeting in New York City on Sept. 2, 2012.

“It is with enormous pride that I share the outstanding news that Sea Colony has been selected to receive the USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award,” said Rich Kent, Tennis Committee chair for the Sea Colony Recreational Association, Inc. (SCRA). “This is a highly coveted award in tennis circles and will certainly increase our current national profile as a world-class tennis resort. Congratulations to all involved. There is no doubt that this award that recognizes our excellent facility will generate additional visibility and interest in Sea Colony as both a destination and for our world-class tennis programs.”

Added Thomas Johnston, Sea Colony’s Director of Tennis: “I am so proud of how our tennis program has developed and evolved over the last two years. Our junior programs have grown rapidly, both in participation and number of offerings, and our schedule of events for all ages and skill levels is diverse.”

In addition to numerous adult and junior tournaments, Johnston highlighted recent additions and upcoming events, including a professional women’s tournament, sport science weekend and a wheelchair tournament, as well as clinics and exhibitions featuring notable pros and teachers, including former world number-one player Richie Reneberg, former French Open doubles champion Luke Jensen and junior guru John Eagleton, just to name a few.

“This accomplishment is due to outstanding leadership of the Sea Colony Tennis Committee, the support of the staff, and the management team at ResortQuest Delaware [which manages vacation rentals and real estate sales for the property],” said Ron Wickwire, President of the SCRA Board of Directors. “Their vision and collaboration made this success possible.”

With 34 tennis courts including four indoor and 14 Har-Tru clay, Sea Colony offers a wide range of camps, clinics and private instruction to tennis players of all ages and skill levels.

Supported by the Sea Colony homeowners and under the guidance of Johnston and his team of teaching professionals, the tennis program has produced state and national champions, elite juniors and top collegiate tennis players, while earning acclaim from state and regional tennis organizations.

In addition to its world-class tennis offerings, Sea Colony, professionally managed by ResortQuest Delaware, features a wide variety of amenities including a half mile of private beach, 12 pools (two indoor) and fitness centers,
