Designing an all-encompassing wellness center incorporates the philosophy of the Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club. Beginning earlier this year, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based facility (featured in C&RB, February 2007) broke ground on its Family Fitness Center, which is expected to be completed in 2010.
The Family Fitness center will contain a pool, hot tub, children’s pool, playground, half-court basketball, three tennis courts, three massage rooms, one wet treatment room, lockers, wet and dry saunas, two yoga and Pilates studios, and a 3,200-sq.-ft. workout facility. It will also include a supervised children’s playroom, teen room, and a newly remodeled swimming pool and deck with separate kiddies’ pool.
THE GOAL:Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club wants to enhance its position as an all-inclusive club with a family-friendly atmosphere.THE PLAN: Construct a Family Fitness Center, including areas for cardiovascular training, circuit training and free weights, two exercise studios and well-appointed locker rooms.
THE PAYOFF: Members will no longer need healthclub memberships and social memberships will increase because of the expansion of non-golf options. |
“We removed the word ‘spa’ from our plan at the very early stages of this project,” says General Manager Dirk Zander. “We have integrated many family-oriented features into the design.”
Because the club’s goal is to provide members and their families with a place where they can swim, interact and exercise all under one roof, management’s vision aims to incorporate all aspects of fitness within the same footprint. “It is important that all of the design elements interact and become seamless in transition, from one portion of the building to the next,” Zander says.
Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club has begun construction on a 3,200-sq. ft., $12.6M Family Fitness Center (see renderings, above right) that will include areas for cardiovascular training, circuit training and free weights, two exercise studios and well-appointed locker rooms (above left). |
The facility will cost about $12.6 million, but the project will also include a remodel to the club’s driving range, an expansion to its bar, the addition of two smaller ballroom/meeting rooms, and a rimless-edge swimming pool.
“Since 1958, Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club has earned its reputation as a welcoming and distinctive private club with a challenging golf course and panoramic Bay Area views,” says Zander. “Our goal with the new facility is to become more family-oriented and maintain our position as one of the top, all-inclusive private country clubs in the Bay Area, both now and for the future.”
